AI Has Cracked the Final Frontier: Label Printing
J
Hi, thanks for stopping by! I am focused on designing and building innovative solutions using AI, the Oracle Database, Oracle APEX, and Oracle REST Data Services (ORDS). I hope you enjoy my blog.

I am working on a project to extend Oracle EBS Discrete Manufacturing. This week, I was asked to develop a report to print labels using APEX Office Print. I am in San Diego, and the label stock and printer are in Montreal, Canada. My heart dropped. I had flashbacks to the early 2000s and check printing in Oracle e-Business Suite!

Thankfully we have come a long way since 2000.

I gave Codex:

  • A sample label.

  • The exact measurements of the six-label stock (page size, label size, margins, etc.)

  • An example AOP template.

  • An example PL/SQL procedure that generated JSON for AOP.

  • The data model where the label data could be found.

Codex traced the data model and built:

  • A reporting view

  • A PL/SQL function to generate the AOP JSON (including barcode handling)

  • A fixed-layout DOCX AOP template with Code 128 barcodes

I generated PDFs through AOP and shared them in the Codex thread so we could adjust spacing, fonts, and the left inset. Codex measured the PDF and adjusted label spacing, the left inset, barcode dimensions, and font sizes.

Three hours later, we had a report ready to test on the actual label stock. We still need to check alignment and barcode scanning on the printer in Montreal. For me, the useful part was having help with both the PL/SQL and the layout adjustments, using the generated PDFs to guide each revision.
